Buffalo return to the Cheyenne River Reservation

By: Jill O'Brien

Wild Idea Buffalo Company has been working with Pam and Rocky Afraid Of Hawk on bringing buffalo back to their ranch on the Cheyenne River Reservation for over a year. After a lot of groundwork, paper work and fence building, the buffalo have returned. We were able to do our first harvest there this week, a very special time for us all.

This is a very homemade video, complete with the constant interruption of the prairie wind. In the video you will hear from Dan & Rocky, and you will be able to watch the details that occur with an actual harvest. You will also see Rocky cleansing the riffle with ceremonial sage and he and his nephew offering a song of thanksgiving.  The short video ends with Rocky and Pam’s grandchildren, whose cultural future just became a little brighter.  It was an honor for us to participate.

At this special time of renewal, we wanted to share a little of what gives us hope, what humbles us, and what gives us a clear vision of our work yet to be done.

However you are celebrating this holiday weekend – we wish you peace.

(We apologize for the shakiness of the video, a glitch transpired during transport, we are w-w-w-w-wo-o-o-o-o-or-r-r-r-rk-k-k-k-k-king on correcting it.)
