Raising buffalo humanely has allowed us to supply conscientious consumers with the delicious, healthy, 100% grass-fed meat they demand. We have left no stone unturned in our effort to “go beyond organic.” We treat our buffalo and their prairie ecosystem with the respect and care that both deserve. Our buffalo are 100% grass-fed, hormone/antibiotic/pesticide free, 100% free roaming, and always humanely harvested. Our model of raising buffalo leads to a superior source of protein that is healthier for the consumer, the environment, and the animal.
Sadly 90% of all organic proteins are currently raised in confinement. Feeding confined animals organic GMO corn and grains greatly dilutes the organic concept. This was certainly not what the organic fore founders had in mind.
In addition to increased health risks and stress to the animals, confinement also increases the health risks to humans, and has irrevocable consequences on the environment. Although organic is better than non-organic, the line becomes increasingly blurred. That’s why Wild Idea Buffalo Company's standards go beyond organic.
Here’s the how and why of our standards.
Wild Idea bison graze on the prairie, eating the nutrient-dense grasses beneath their feet. This action turns healthy prairie grasses into a healthy, delicious, sustainable red meat. The health benefits of 100% grass-fed/grass-finished protein cannot be overstated. Its naturally lean profile makes it lower in fat, calories and cholesterol, but higher in protein and antioxidants, and it’s loaded with omega-3s. Unlike most buffalo, ours are NEVER feedlot-confined and never corn-finished. This also helps to keep our prairies intact, providing a sustainable eco-system for all creatures great and small, and keeping carbon stored safely underground.
The use of antibiotics and hormones is not allowed in the bison industry, or in other USDA organic proteins. They are widely used in non-organic proteins, and science is proving that the overuse of these drugs is directly linked to antibiotic resistance and advanced maturation in children. Meats containing hormones or antibiotics should be avoided.
Wild Idea Bison graze on thousands and thousands of acres of grassland pastures, where everything is given an equal opportunity to not only live, but to thrive. We welcome the bugs, beetles, insects, varmints, deer, antelope, and the more than one hundred species of birds. Our prairies and environment can’t live without them. Weeds are not controlled with sprays, but with intensive grazing, which naturally rehabilitates the soil, and by replanting native grasses using a no-till drill method. This is a lengthy, expensive process, but we think that the planet is worth it.
Genetically Modified Organisms are seeds that have been modified to withstand the spraying of herbicides and pesticides on the crop without killing the GMO corn or grain. GMO draught resistant seeds are also making their way to the market, which will greatly increase the threat of the plowing of our prairies. Rest assured – our animals graze on non-GMO grassland prairies, and are never subjected to unnatural feeds such as GMO grains or GMO corn.
Our buffalo roam much like their ancestors did over 200 years ago, eating only the grasses beneath their feet. Our grassland pastures range between 500 and 24,000 acres each, giving these natural roamers plenty of space to move about. On average, a bison roams between two and five miles per day. We really do provide a home where the buffalo roam, and the deer and the antelope play!
Confining buffalo in trailers and slaughterhouses is inhumane and generates a tremendous amount of fear in the animal. The fear causes stress, which triggers high levels of the hormone cortisol. This hormone greatly affects the flavor and tenderness of the meat. Wild Idea’s standards insist on humane field harvest in the pastures where the animals graze. Our humane field harvest eliminates the fear and the high levels of cortisol, keeping the animal calm and the meat tender and delicious. And yes, you can taste the difference!
Quite simply, if you are searching for the healthiest, most sustainable, and most humanely raised red meat available, look no further than Wild Idea Buffalo Company.
