Buffalo Sloppy Joe's

There is something about a Sloppy Joe that makes me feel like a kid again. It brings back fond memories of county fairs, with the smell of this barbecue concoction drifting through the air. A great make ahead recipe for reheating when life gets busy, but a hot meal is needed!

Ingredients

  • 2 - teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 - onion, diced fine
  • 2 - pounds Wild Idea Ground Buffalo
  • 2 - teaspoons each: black pepper, cumin, mustard
  • 1 - teaspoons each: salt, chili powder
  • 2 - tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 - tablespoons garlic, chopped
  • ¾ - cup ketchup
  • ¾ - cup water
  • hamburger buns
  • pickles

Directions

  1. In heavy skillet over medium high heat, heat the oil.
  2. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 4 minutes.
  3. Crumble the ground buffalo into the pan, stir in, breaking the meat into smaller pieces. Add the spices while the meat is browning and stir to incorporate.
  4. When the meat is browned, stir in the ketchup and water, and let come to full heat.
  5. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve on hamburger buns or smaller slider size buns.

    • Today is Memorial Day and your Sloppy Joes are on the menu. They are excellent with just the right amount of spices for an interesting taste. When I was a kid (75 years ago) my mother made Chili Burgers as a special treat. Thanks for sharing.

    • Made these Sloppy Joes and they were a hit! We froze some for later use. After my husband tasted them, he said it needs a bit more ketchup. So, I added another 2 squirts to it and some Worcestershire sauce. We had some of these last night and wish we would have kept more out of the freezer!
