As part of these efforts, we’ve taken steps to make our commitment to our mission official through certifying agencies like the USDA, ROC, AGW, and the National Audubon Society.

REGENERATIVE ORGANIC CERTIFIED - SILVER

Our family's ranch, Cheyenne River Buffalo Ranch, is the first buffalo operation in the United States to obtain Regenerative Organic Certification (ROC) status. The ROC certification is overseen by the Regenerative Organic Alliance, a group of experts brought together by the Rodale Institute, Dr. Bronner’s, and Patagonia. This certification evaluates operations against three pillars of Soil Health and Land Management, Animal Welfare, and Farmer and Worker Fairness. Obtaining this certification also requires that operations be certified organic by the USDA. By looking at a variety of standards, including land coverage, crop rotation, soil disturbance, rotational grazing, composting, and freedom from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, the Regenerative Organic Alliance and the ROC certification have become the gold standard in soil regeneration.

USDA ORGANIC

As part of our ROC certification, we are also proud to be certified organic by the USDA. To be certified as an organic operation by the USDA, our buffalo must be managed organically from the last third of gestation; have year round access to the outdoors and access to certified organic pasture for the entire grazing season; be raised on certified organic land that meets all organic crop production standards; be fed 100% organic feed; and be managed without antibiotics, added growth hormones, mammalian or avian by products, or other prohibited feed ingredients. As part of this process, we also partnered with California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) to obtain our certification, allowing for 2% of our certification fees to go towards education, financial assistance for organic farmers, and grant provision through the CCOF Foundation.

Audubon Certified Bird Friendly Land

Our founder Dan O’Brien will often say that Wild Idea is not a meat company, but a prairie regeneration company. Given that this company started from Dan’s love of birds and his desire to see the Great Plains restored, it made sense to partner with the National Audubon Society to get our land certified. This voluntary certification promotes ranch management practices that provide habitats for grassland birds. To obtain this certification, ranches must meet a set of strict habitat management protocols, in addition to protocols related to forage and feeding, animal health and welfare, and environmental sustainability.

Animal Welfare Approved

In everything Wild Idea Buffalo does, we want to ensure that we are putting our animals and their needs first. Our Animal Welfare Approved Certification through A Greener World guarantees that animals are raised outdoors on pasture or range for their entire life. It also verifies that animals spent their entire life on an independent farm. This certification is audited yearly and oversees production, transport, and slaughter practices.
