The Great Plains prairies are home to over 200 ground nesting birds and many other tree nesters. Some are "fly-overs", who stop along the way for a respite on their migration journey before continuing on to their nesting grounds further north.

Their calls from overhead bring us all to a stop, searching the skies for a glimpse of those that will move on.

Other bird species return in the spring, and make the ranch their home, to nest and raise their young during the summer.

There are some that stay throughout the year, making the winters a little less bleak.

This year the Cheyenne River Buffalo Ranch, will host the South Dakota Grassland Coalition Bird Count Tour.  If you are a member of the SD Grassland coalition, it is free to attend. If not, the cost is $35.00 per person for the two day event, which will be held June 3rd & 4th. Details and registration for the event can be found here
